Judy and family live in a newly built home (2010) on the corner of West Commercial Ave. and N. Oak St. right across the road from another quilt square owner, the Cantrell Family.
The Cup and Saucer was first started in the late 1940’s and moved to it’s present location in 1954/55. Through all it’s owners, besides good food, the one thing makes it stand out is the pictures that have been gathered over the years of the History of Monterey and the surrounding area. From the Tennessee Central Railroad, to the Coal Mines, Lumber Mills and even the Moonshine Stills, those pictures are on the wall. Our town newspaper editor, Dale Welch has dubbed the Cup and Saucer as “Monterey’s Unofficial Pictorial History Museum”.
They chose the name of the “Diner” for our two quilt squares to represent our restaurant. The two most important people in a restaurant are the cook/baker and the waitress. They felt that this would make a most interesting and unique quilt. So, one quilt square represents an old-fashioned waitress with a cup and saucer; the second one, an old-fashioned baker.

Built in the 1890s, the building originally contained Bilbrey Brothers Feeds. Bob and Betty King operated it for many years as a grocery and sold it to Ed and Lucille Phipps, who operated it as E & L Market. Reba has been a florist since 1984 and has been at the downtown location for 15 years. Besides flowers, Reba sells quilts and has a Christian Bookstore. She credits her love of quilts to her mother, Lyda Harris.
