MAIN INFORMATION

FOUR GENERATIONS OF PHARMACISTS.Thomas Emett Goff was one of the early Monterey founders. The first building on the site was the West Crest Hotel. When it burned, he rebuilt a drug store. At the time of his death in his 90s, Goff was the oldest licensed PHARMACIST in the state. His son and daughter-in-law, Dewey and Louetta Goff took over operation and ran it for many years. One of Goff’s nieces (one of the three he raised as his own, Therea Watson Bishop and husband Harold, came back to Monterey and opened Bishops Drugs nearby, but came back into Goff’s Drug store to help the ailing Dewey. The fourth generation, Cliff and wife, Connie Bishop operate the drug store, now.

Flower Basket & Pansies

MAIN INFORMATION

The Monterey Senior Citizens Center was first organized in the early 1970s. The first advisory board was organized in Aug., 1998. By 2002, the center moved from the Monterey Community Center into their present location.

A committee picked the "Flower Basket" and the "Pansy" as old fashioned quilt squares that are now in place at the Monterey Senior Center on the annex facing Commercial Ave, next to the flower garden.. The squares are in honor of former board chair Mrs. Geri Lusk and Mrs. Ruby Vail.

Monterey Hardware was opened by Butch and Carol Robbins a little over 10 years before Mike Connor bought it in 2004 and moved into the community. They have everything from nuts and bolts to a seasonal garden center available for their customers.

Standing Stone

Located in Monterey, this trail stop along the Quilt Trail is part of Putnam County, within the Upper Cumberland Tennessee region.

MAIN INFORMATION

The Monterey Branch Library is located adjacent to the Historic Standing Stone monument in Whittaker Park. Library Employee Dean Phillips did the original quilt pattern. The branch library opened up in a newly built building in 1997. The building was doubled in size ten years later, in 2007. The Monterey Branch continues to be the most used branch library in the county, with more numbers than all the other branches combined. Because of its location, Monterey Branch Library draws patrons not only from the eastern end of Putnam Couny, but from adjoing counties, including Overton, Fentress, Cumberland and White.

Spring Sunshine

Located in Monterey, this waypoint along the Quilt Trail is part of Putnam County, within the Upper Cumberland Tennessee region.

MAIN INFORMATION

The Cantrell home was built in 1900 by the D.M. and Mollie Speck family. Mr. Speck was a wholesale lumber dealer, according to the U.S. Census. He was elected Mayor of Monterey and severed a two-year term (1922-1923).
