MAIN INFORMATION

The community known as Standing Stone was incorporated at the Town of Monterey in 1893. It was laid out by the Cumberland Mountain Coal Company. The town was named “Monterey” in a contest. The winner was Robert Moscrip, the Cumberland Mountain Coal Co. engineer. He was given a block in the town, just one block north of where city hall now sits.

The MHS Art Clubhas completed two of the three quilt squares they have been working on for the Town of Monterey. These two squares will be at the Monterey City Hall. The quilt squares were picked by a committee consisting of Alderwomen Peggy Matheney and Clarice Weist.
