Square in a Square

Located in Knoxville, this trail stop along the Quilt Trail is part of Knox County, within the East Tennessee region.

MAIN INFORMATION

Ramsey House was built in 1797 of locally sourced pink marble and blue limestone, and was once known as the “finest house in Tennessee”. Because of its architectural sophistication and relative opulence, Ramsey House welcomed many diplomats and important guests through its doors. Once considered an anomaly among log cabins and wooden structures, the house stands today as a reminder of the enduring Ramsey Family Legacy. Also known as Swan Pond, the two story house was constructed by English architect Thomas Hope for Colonel Francis Alexander Ramsey (1764–1820). In 1969, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places for its architecture and its role in the region's early 19th-century history. Guided tours begin on the top of each hour in the Gift Shop located in the Visitor Center. Ramsey House also hosts numerous special events throughout the year. Please go to ramseyhouse.org to book a tour and to view a full calendar.

The square was designed for Ramsey House by the Smoky Mountain Quilters Guild. It reflects the actual fabric used in the original piece.
