Flying Dutchman

Located in Unicoi, this trail stop along the Quilt Trail is part of Unicoi County, within the East Tennessee region.

MAIN INFORMATION

Wayne Scott, then a vocational agriculture teacher, and his wife started the farm as a "husband and wife" operation in 1958. They moved the family from Erwin to the farm in Unicoi and began with 2 acres of strawberries and the goal of sending all five children to college. Employing the children and neighbors, they grew strawberries during summer months and added tomatoes in 1961. The tomato packing house was built in 1964. The farm continued to expand during the 1980's, growing to 100 acres. The Scott produce can be found in many of the local grocery stores throughout the growing season. The farm continues to be a family operation.

The quilter of the Flying Dutchman was Mary France Scott born in 1868. She was the daughter of Robert France, a Union Solder in the Tennessee 13th. Her family was one of the pioneer families of Washington County. The quilt was made like most quilts back then, using feed-sacks and old clothing. The lining was made from flour sacks that were bleached. On the back of this quilt you can still read the words "Bluff City Mill".

Crazy Quilt

Located in Erwin, this trail stop along the Quilt Trail is part of Unicoi County, within the East Tennessee region.

MAIN INFORMATION

In its day, it was one of the grandest homes in the Country. The years took a toll, and, by 1982, the stately old house had become dilapidated and almost impossible to heat. The Federal Government ordered its demolition. Mr. Ralph Erwin of the Unicoi County Chamber of Commerce suggested the renovation of the house into a museum and center for community activities. The Chamber, working with the Hatchery Superintendent, Mr. Roger Schultz, signed an agreement with the United States Government that "Quarters #1" should become the Unicoi County Heritage Museum. On July 3, 1982, nine rooms were opened to the public.

Triple Irish Chain

Located in Piney Flats, this waypoint along the Quilt Trail is part of Sullivan County, within the East Tennessee region.

MAIN INFORMATION

The Masengill Farm was established one year before the Declaration of Independance was signed and is the oldest certified Century farm in Tennessee. Located in Sullivan County and surrounding the state-owned historic sight, Rocky Mount, and crossing Hwy. 11-E, the farm was part of the Watauga Purchase, lands bought from the Cherokees on March 19, 1775. The Farm was founded by Henry Masengill Sr. and his wife Mary Cobb, sister of noted early settler William Cobb. By 1943, the great great grandson of the founders and his wife were operating a farm of over 700 acres. They raised Polled Herefords, mules, grains, and tobacco. In 1959, the Cobb and Masengill descendants agreed to sell a portion of the land to the State of tennessee to operate and interpret as a musuem of early settlement, political history, and farm life. Today, the owner remains an active manager on the family farm. The Masengill Farm is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The 'Triple Irish Chain' Block design came from a quilt that Ms. Sallie Massengil-Bell has on display at her home. The quilt was made by her mother in the early 1900's when the 'Irish Chain' pattern was popular among quilters.

The block was painted as a class art project by the Mary Hughes Middle School, under the direction of Ms. Barbara Miller. Each student in the middle school had a hand in painting this work of public art.
