Jackson County welcomes visitors to the Upper Cumberland Region to enjoy the rich scenic beauty, history and culture of the area. Attractions feature boating, camping, hunting, fishing, hiking and other sport activities. Communities offer museums and shopping in an old fashioned atmosphere where festivals center on the historic square in Gainesboro and the river town of Granville among others.
Houston County was first settled in the 1780’s when early pioneers traveling the Cumberland River ventured up Wells Creek and settled in the area where navigable waters ceased. In 1871, Houston County was established and named in honor of former Governor and hero, Sam Houston.
Gibson County was created in 1823 from the Chickasaw Indian Cession, and is named in honor of John H. Gibson.
Fentress County is known as the Trail Riding Capital of the Southeast to the equestrian community with hundreds of acres of trails, overlooks, unique geological formations, and waterfalls. Many horse campgrounds, cabins, and stables are located in the county and in and around the parks.
