Quilt Pattern

German Pinwheel

Located in Surgoinsville, this waypoint along the Quilt Trail is part of Hawkins County, within the East Tennessee region.

MAIN INFORMATION

German Pinwheel is located at the Fudge Farm on one of the oldest farms in Surgoinsville (1835). The quilt pattern is taken from a family heirloom quilt that was brought by boat from Germany and then by covered wagon to the Fudge Farm. The quilt is stored in a cedar chest up stairs. The Fudge farm is still owned by members of the original family that received the farm through a land grant.

The Fudge Farm, located twelve miles east of Rogersville, is the second Century Farm in Hawkins County to evolve from the original 1852 estate of Conrad Fudge. It gains special significance for the number of remaining mid-1800s buildings. Beautifully preserved, it contains a log barn, log corn crib, and original slave quarters.

In 1948, the founder's great-granddaughter inherited 76 acres of the family land. Together with a farm tenant, she operates the property and yeilds tobacco, hay, grass, and cattle.
