Halifax County, Virginia lies just north of the North Carolina border, in the middle of the state of Virginia East-West; the population is a little over 36,000 and the largest town in the county is South Boston. Other towns include Halifax (the County seat), Scottsburg and Virgilina.

We have a great mix of things to do, so whether you prefer watching race cars or Amish buggies you'll have fun here. Outdoor enthusiasts will love that w're a part of Southern Virginia's Wild Blueway, and Virginia's largest lake, Buggs Island Lake (aka Kerr Lake) is located here; Buggs Island offers any kind of watersport you can imagine, and the world's record 143-lb catfish was caught in the lake! We also have Banister Lake and Lake Conner, as well as Banister River, Dan River, Hyco River, Staunton River, Aarons Creek and Difficult Creek. Boating, paddling, swimming, fishing - it's all here!

We're also famous for our motorsports, home to South Boston Speedway and VIRginia International Raceway. NASCAR drivers and brothers Ward and Jeff Burton grew up here, as well as Ward's son Jeb Burton. In Jeff's words, "South Boston is the largest small town in America;" he notes that, regardless of where he travels, he always meets someone with ties to South Boston. Ward won the Daytona 500 in 2002 and is Virginia's only Daytona 500 winner. Jeff still races part-time and is also an analyst for NBC. Jeb is currently racing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

History lovers will enjoy battlefields, museums, genealogy at the Court House, historic Berry Hill Plantation, the Crossing of the Dan exhibit, and more. You don't have to just look at historic sites, though! You can follow our various trails to trace history: the Tobacco Heritage Trail, Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail, Wilson-Kautz Civil War Trail, and Lee's Retreat Civil War Trail.

Performing and visual arts lovers will be impressed by The Prizery, our cultural and performing arts center that is housed in a renovated tobacco buliding; the Prizery offers live performances, including the professional Summer Theatre series, as well as an art gallery. Kids, especially, will love Bob Cage's Sculpture Farm, where they can watch goats frolic amongst Bob's amazing sculptures.

Our economic heritage lies in agriculture, and agritourism opportunities abound in Halifax County. From Farm Stays to just buying produce from local growers at our two Farmers Markets, you can be as involved as you like. Tastings at our four wineries, horseback riding, farm classes, visiting the Amish - you'll be surprised at the variety.

When you arrive, make sure to stop by our Visitor Center and say hi! We're conveniently located at the intersection of Highways 58 & 360; you can pick up brochures, browse our rotating exhibits, and shop for unique gifts. We look forward to seeing you!

54-40 or Fight!

Color Wheel Farm is a working farm located about 20 minutes from Sweetwater Valley Farm and I-75 waypoint along the Quilt Trail is part of Monroe County, within the Southeast Tennessee region.

MAIN INFORMATION

The quilt pattern was chosen based on the the Oregon Border Dispute, taking place around the 1820's. The family wanted to tie it in to a significant event in US history.

In 1820, Thomas and Jane Young White established the farm on 160 acres located near Vonore. The Whites, together with their nine children, raised corn, wheat, oats, cattle, sheep and swine. Over the years, land was added, and in 1876, Ewing Young White inherited a portion of the farm. Near the turn o f the century, his son Tom acquired 450 acres of his family land. Ewing's daughter, Jennie Moser, inherited the farm from her brother Tom in 1955. Married to R.J. Moser, Jennie had three daughters. One of her daughters, Betty Black, and her husband Earl (Red) Black, acquired the original homestead in 1957. The blacks have since acquired about 400 acres of additional farmland. The original nineteenth century home was renovated by Earl and Betty in 1957. There is also a nineteenth century smokehouse that was restored in 2006. The farm is designated a "Tennessee Century Farm" and currently the oldest family farm in Monroe County. Color Wheel Farm is a seven-generation farm and is currently owned by Brad Black and his sister, Jenny. Brad, along with his wife, Kim, work the farm full time. Crops include corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, hay and switchgrass. There is also a cow/calf herd. The name "Color Wheel" came from Betty Black. She said the farm was first owned by the White family, now the Blacks, thus it has come all the way around the color wheel. In 2011 the farm was placed under a conservation easement with Foothills Land Conservancy to protect it from the encroaching city limits and development. The barn where the quilt hangs was erected in the early 1900s as a tobacco barn and used for tobacco until 2006.
