Tipton County was established in 1823 and was formed from land from Shelby County. It was named after Captain Jacob Tipton, who was killed while leading a charge of his troops against a force of Indians near Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1791.

Lake County, TN

Lake County was founded in 1870. It was named in honor of Reelfoot Lake. The lake was formed by a series of earthquakes in 1811 that damaged Reelfoot River, causing some changes in the course of the Mississippi River.

Decatur County, TN

Decatur County was formed in 1845 was named in honor of Stephen Decatur, an early-American naval hero.

Hardin County, TN

Hardin County was created in November of 1819 from the Jackson Purchase. The County was named after Joseph Hardin, a legislator of the Southwest Territory and State of Franklin.

Haywood County, TN

Haywood County was created in 1823 from land from Madison County. The county was named after Judge John Haywood, called “the father of Tennessee history.”

Henderson County, TN

Henderson County was created in 1821 from Chickasaw Indian lands. The county was named after James Henderson, an officer of the War of 1812.

Madison County, TN

Madison County was created in 1821 from the Western District, and was named in honor of President James Madison.

McNairy County, TN

McNairy County was created out of land from the Chickasaw Indians in 1823. The county was named in honor of John McNairy, whom President George Washington had appointed as one of the three judges of the Southwest Territory.

Henry County, TN

Henry County was created in 1821, and named in honor of Patrick Henry a Virginia statesman, patriot and Revolutionary leader, member of the Virginia colonial and state legislatures and the Continental Congress, governor of Virginia. Henry County became the gateway for the settlement of West Tennessee and beyond.

Lauderdale County, TN

Lauderdale County was created in 1835 from Haywood, Dyer and Tipton Counties. It was named in honor of James Lauderdale, an Indian War and War of 1812 officer who died leading troops against the British in 1814, prior to the Battle of New Orleans.
